Statement from Town Council Chair Regarding the Death of George Floyd

I am writing, as Chairwoman of the Coventry Town Council, in complete support of the statement that Police Chief, Mark Palmer, released on behalf of the Coventry Police Department.

I, and I believe all of our Town Council members, agree with everything that our Police Chief said. The death of George Floyd while in police custody was tragic and uncalled for. I am heartened that not only the officer most directly involved but those that stood by and watched and took no actions to prevent his death are in custody and have been charged appropriately. I join our chief and the scores of peaceful protesters in calling for justice for George Floyd.

I have known and worked with Chief Palmer and many of our officers for many years.  I know them to be dedicated to keeping our citizens and all they serve safe. As Chief Palmer states, the Coventry Police are well trained and taught to de-escalate situations and they have proven to be very effective at that in the past.

The senseless death of George Floyd was avoidable and is inexcusable and I condemn it and want to assure our citizens that all of Coventry’s police officers are committed to fair and unbiased justice that treats all our citizens equally.   I want to voice my strong support for the Coventry Police department and feel that such a tragedy would never occur in Coventry, due to their training, the departments guidelines, and the obvious commitment of all of our officers to keep ALL of us safe.
